Virtualization Baby!
Whoo hoo! Parallels released a beta of their virtual machine engine for Intel Macs today.
I know the folks at Q are working on porting the virtualization support from QEMU, but this looks like it is real. Now.
If it works well, I’d be much happier with this than with having to dual boot using Boot Camp. Either way it’s been a wicked week of cross platform support announcements for the Mac.
Now, what did MS say was happening with Virtual PC again?
Boot Camp
Wonders never cease!
Apple has posted details of dual boot support for Windows XP on Intel Macs in the upcoming Leopard release, available as a Beta for Tiger now.
If this had happened 4 days ago I would have called "April Fools…"
I’ve been keeping my eye on Q – I think if I needed "Winders" I’d still prefer to run it in a sandbox from within OS X rather than have to dual boot to get it. Still, this is pretty amazing for Apple to do considering their previous statements on the subject.
And no, this doesn’t mean Dvorak was right. 🙂
tacow
Karl and I launched the Toronto Area Cocoa and WebObjects (tacow) developers group today. OK, we registered a domain and created the website, but come on, it’s something!
We took a road trip to Chicago last month to sit in on the CAWUG meeting and had a blast, so we’re really hoping to create a similar group here. We’re not shooting for anything overly structured, just a venue to geek out, learn some stuff, and share stories.
Karl’s putting the final touches on the announcement for our first meeting and that’ll go up soon. If you’re interested in attending, or want to help, please head over to the tacow.org site and sign up and post a comment.
SuperDuper! 2.0
Keeping backups is essential. However, finding backup software that is easy to understand, easy to use, and (above all) inspires confidence is rare. Luckily for me there is SuperDuper!.
I’ve been using SD! for (almost exactly) one year now and it has saved my bacon several times. SD!’s Smart Update feature is so fast that it is painless to run before applying software updates. Being able to revert after discovering an incompatibility (which often happens with Xcode or WO updates) is a godsend.
Now, Shirt Pocket has rewarded my loyalty by updating SuperDuper! to version 2.0.
SuperDuper! 2.0 includes scheduling and other enhancements (the press release with all the gory details can be found here).
